What happens when your car doesn’t start?
We’ve all been there—you hop in the car, turn the key (or push the button), and… nothing. No lights, no sound, no start. You try again. Still nothing.
Most likely? You’ve got a dead battery.
How a Jump Start Helps
A jump start is a quick and effective way to temporarily revive a dead battery. It works by connecting your car’s battery to an external power source—usually another vehicle or a portable jump box—using jumper cables. This sends a surge of power to your battery, giving your engine just enough juice to start up.
Once the engine is running, your alternator takes over and begins recharging the battery—but only if the battery is still capable of holding a charge. If the battery is too far gone, the engine might shut off the moment you stop driving, and you’ll be right back where you started.
That’s why a jump start is great for emergencies, but not always a long-term fix.
Why Car Batteries Die
Car batteries rely on internal fluid (electrolyte) and lead plates to store and deliver power. Over time, the fluid evaporates or the internal components degrade, reducing the battery’s ability to hold a charge. Eventually, it gives out entirely.
Most car batteries last between 2 and 5 years, depending on your driving habits, the climate, and the quality of the battery. If it’s been a while since your last replacement, this might be your wake-up call.
Can You Extend Your Battery’s Life?
Technically, yes—but we don’t recommend it unless you’re an experienced mechanic. Some methods involve topping off the battery’s fluid or reconditioning the cells, but improper handling can be dangerous. It’s usually safer (and smarter) to replace it.
